Overview

The Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology (APM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established by merging the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS (founded in 1958) and the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics of the CAS (founded in 1957). Approved by CAS, the construction work of APM started from September 2017. Then upon the approval of the State Commission Office of Public Sectors Reform (SCOPSR), AMP was officially established in April 2019. The establishment of APM   represents CAS’s action in following the “Pioneer Initiative” and fulfilling China’s need for a well-structured science and technology management system.

Based on precision measurement science and technology innovation, APM responds actively to the country’s critical needs. APM conducts cutting-edge cross-disciplinary research on atomic and molecular and precision measurement physics, magnetic resonance, geodesy and geophysics, mathematical calculation, and thus promoting the development of disciplines that focus on atomic frequency standards, atomic interferometry, magnetic resonance, gravity measurement, seismic detection and other precision measurement technologies, forming three advantageous directions, namely, precision atom, precision molecule and precision earth.

APM has two state key laboratories, namely the State Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance and Atomic and Molecular Physics, and the State Key Laboratory of Geodesy and Earth’s Dynamics. Beyond that, APM has national platforms including the National Centre for Magnetic Resonance in Wuhan, Wuhan National Geodetic Observatory, the Navigation Department of the National Engineering Research Centre for Satellite Positioning System, the Analysis Centre of the International GNSS Monitoring & Assessment Service as a major project for China's Second Generation Satellite Navigation System, and the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics. In addition, APM is the host institute for CAS Key Laboratory of Atomic Frequency Standards, CAS Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems, and Honghu Wetland Eco-experimental Station. APM is also the host institute for some provincial platforms such as the Key Laboratory for Environments and Disaster Monitoring and Evaluating of Hubei province, Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center of Spectral Detection, Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center of Space Atomic Clock, Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center of Non-point Source Pollution Prevention and Control, etc.

APM now has over 600 staff members, including three academicians, YE Chaohui, SUN Heping, and LIU Maili. 12 scientists have been awarded as Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Science Fund, and one scientist has been awarded as Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Defense Science and Technology Fund. Among all scientists with senior titles, national and provincial-level talents account for over 60%. From 2017 to date, APM has undertaken dozens of major key projects in the field of precision measurement, including one National Pioneering Science and Technology Special Program (RMB 250 million), 12 Key R&D Programs and more than 10 Major Instrumentation R&D Special Programs. APM has been engaged in satisfying the national and social needs with its specialty in precision measurement science and technology as well as state-of-the-art instruments.

APM has three authorized first-level doctoral and master's degree training programs in physics, chemistry, surveying and mapping science and technology, 12 authorized second-level doctoral and master's degree training programs in applied mathematics, pure mathematics, solid earth physics, natural geography, and three authorized professional master's degree training programs in electronic information, biology and medicine, surveying and mapping engineering, three authorized first-level post-doctoral stations in mathematics, physics, surveying and mapping science and technology.

Looking ahead into the future, APM will keep innovating in precision measurement science and technology, facing the major strategic needs of the country with its multidisciplinary strength, and aiming high in constructing an international first-class research institution.
