Recently, the launch symposium for the joint strategic research project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), titled "Earthquake Initiation to Termination Processes and Mechanisms: Frontier Exploration and Interdisciplinary Strategic Research," undertaken by the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology (APM), was held in Beijing. SUN Li, Director of the Discipline Policy Division of the Planning and Policy Bureau of the NSFC, and DENG Pan, the Business Supervisor of the Academic Divisions of the CAS, attended the meeting and delivered speeches, among others.

SUN Li emphasized that in the face of significant national strategic demands and complex and severe technological competition, a single disciplinary perspective is insufficient to address these challenges. The field of earthquake research is not only a key focus of national strategy but also a complex area that spans disciplinary boundaries and urgently requires interdisciplinary integration. It necessitates breaking down traditional disciplinary barriers and fostering deep integration between earth sciences and other related disciplines, and jointly advancing in-depth research and development in this field.

DENG Pan expressed sincere gratitude to the joint funding provided by the Funding Commission, the valuable insights shared by all participating experts,, and the diligent work of the project participants. Earthquake science research is not only an important area of frontier scientific exploration but also crucial to the safety of people's lives and property and the overall economic and social development. The Academic Divisions of the CAS will fully support the implementation of the project, coordinate project efforts, and promote substantial achievements in the research. Additionally, they anticipate that the project's outcomes will voice the perspectives of Chinese scientists in the global scientific community and enhance the international influence of Chinese earth scientists.

Academician NI Sidao, the project leader, presented a report on the project implementation plan. After carefully listening to the report, the expert team members provided sincere suggestions for the subsequent research plans of the project. Members of the project team, as well as relevant staff from the APM and the Earth Science Division of the NSFC, attended the meeting.
