On February 28th, theoretical physicist and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences SUN Changpu was invited as a guest speaker for the sixth edition of the "Shishuo" Forum at the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology (APM). He delivered a special report titled "From Creative Learning to Scientific Research" to the faculty and students. LIU Xiaojun, party secretary and vice president of APM, attended the report session. Nearly 400 faculty members and students participated in the event, which was hosted by HE Hujun, the principal responsible person of the graduate office.
On behalf of APM, LIU Xiaojun extended a warm welcome to Academician SUN Changpu and expressed profound respect for his long-standing care and support for the institute. He hoped that the faculty and students of APM would deeply comprehend the scientific spirit advocated by Academician SUN through his report, uphold integrity and innovation, be down-to-earth in their studies and work, conduct truly meaningful scientific research, and advance towards the scientific frontier through long-term accumulation.
Academician SUN Changpu's report focused on the concept of "creative learning" and delved into its pivotal role in cultivating innovative scientific and technological talents as well as driving scientific research. Academician SUN first analyzed the connotation of "creative learning" from a practical perspective, emphasizing its characteristics of transcending passive knowledge acquisition and focusing on the cultivation of critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and innovative consciousness. Subsequently, combining his own experiences in learning, teaching, and scientific research, he shared with the students his personal transformation process from an undergraduate to a graduate student and his individual experiences in creative learning. He elaborated on how to achieve a leap from being a knowledge learner to a knowledge creator through creative learning and advised the students to distinguish between knowledge innovation and the academic gray zone, using the scientific spirit to resist the graying of academics. Academician SUN Changpu proposed that the construction of a technologically powerful country cannot be separated from scientific and technological talents with original innovative capabilities. The cultivation of such talents must be rooted in the fertile soil of creative learning, through long-term accumulation and down-to-earth efforts, ultimately advancing towards the scientific frontier and conducting truly meaningful scientific research. He demonstrated the practical significance of the scientific spirit in the process of knowledge creation through specific examples such as the "verification" of predictions made by general relativity and the "discovery" of Majorana fermions. Academician SUN emphasized that the core of the scientific spirit lies in seeking truth and being pragmatic, daring to explore, and daring to question, and that the cultivation of these qualities cannot be separated from the influence of creative learning. The report quoted classics and was detailed and fascinating. The venue was fully occupied, and applause echoed continuously throughout.
At the event venue, LIU Xiaojun presented Academician SUN Changpu with a commemorative plaque for the "Shishuo" forum. Academician SUN then answered questions from teachers and students on topics such as "How to better guide students in choosing research topics" and "How to avoid entering the gray areas of scientific research."
This "Shishuo" forum demonstrated the patriotism and academic prowess of seasoned scientists, embodied the importance placed by the older generation of educators on fostering moral character and cultivating talent, and conveyed the affection and expectations of the older generation of scientific researchers towards the teachers and students of APM. Many attendees expressed that they had drawn strength from the report, strengthened their beliefs and determination to overcome difficulties, and vowed to inherit and carry forward the spirit of the older generation of scientists by being pragmatic, dedicated to exploration, striving for excellence, and daring to scale new heights in their scientific research endeavors.
