Researcher Ni Sidao from APM is elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

On November 22, the Chinese Academy of Sciences releases the ‘List of Newly Elected Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for 2023’. The Chinese Academy of Sciences elects 59 academicians in 2023. Ni Sidao, a researcher and deputy director of the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology (APM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) , is elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Ni Sidao, a geophysicist, was born in September 1970 and is from Xuzhou, Jiangsu, Han nationality. He is a researcher and deputy director of APM, and the director of the State Key Laboratory of Geodesy and Earth’s Dynamics. He is a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1993 and 1996 respectively, and his doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in the United States in 2001. He returned to China in 2004 to engage in teaching and scientific research. He has been selected for talent plans such as the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education. He is currently the vice chairman of the Chinese Geophysical Society and an editorial board member of journals such as Geophysical Journal International and Journal of Geophysics.

Ni Sidao has been engaged in geophysical research for a long time. With the support of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund and the 973 Project, he led the team to focus on scientific issues such as the characteristics of the Earth’s internal interfaces and geodynamic effects, and proposed a theoretical method system for multi-index seismic phase identification and inversion, achieving a series of results in complex forms and fine structures of the Earth’s internal interfaces. He has published more than 200 papers in domestic and foreign academic journals such as Nature, Science, Science in China, and Journal of Geophysics. His research results have been frequently noticed by the Perspective column of the Science journal. He was selected for the Elsevier‘Highly Cited Scholars in China’ list in 2021 and 2022. As the first person to complete the project, he won the first prize of the Hubei Provincial Natural Science Award and the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Geophysical Society.
